Update Watch! Veronica Mars, the Hulu Revival

Good afternoon, Marshmallows!

Almost two years ago, I finally got around to watching Veronica Mars and wrote about it here on the blog. If you’ve been following the news since, we got a wonderful surprise back in August. VM creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell were in talks for a revival of the hit noir series with streaming juggernaut Hulu. I don’t know about you guys, but I instantly went into full fandom freak out mode but details were scant. Nothing was confirmed and at that point, the only two names tied to the project were Thomas and Bell. I love KB as much as the next Marshmallow, but VM’s greatness came from the chemistry across the entire cast, so until we knew more, I tried not to get my hopes up.

Since the August story, the project has acquired an official greenlight from the suits at Hulu, original cast members have begun signing on, and we have a start date (sort of).

Here is what we know so far…

The series will run in 2019.

Although they’ve stated that it will begin in 2019, that could be December 2019. They have yet to release the month. However, Kristen Bell did confirm that production begins in November 2018.

In addition to the revival, Hulu has acquired the streaming rights for seasons 1-3 and the 2014 movie.

For those who like to binge watch, you’ll be able to consume the entire VM world before you start on the new revival series. Word is, they won’t be available on the streaming service until Summer 2019, which also hints at the timing for the release of the revival.

The revival will be comprised of eight hour-long episodes following a single story arc.

The original show’s basic structure followed one or two cases over the course of each season with each weekly episode also following its own arc or case. The revival will be eight episodes that make up one large story arc.

Rob Thomas told E! News“If we get to do it again…I think the way to make it survive is to—If the movie was kind of a love letter to the fans, anything that comes from now on, I think, is going to be about the kickass mystery…If we get to do it again, that’s what I want to deliver. I want to make Veronica the first name in female detectives. I have no designs on supplanting Sherlock Holmes, but I would really love Veronica Mars to be—when I think female detectives, that’s who I think of.”

The tone of the show will be darker and more grown up.

Being housed on Hulu, the revival will have more freedoms as far as explicit content goes. As a subscription-based streaming service, Hulu is not bound by network rules. Swearing, sexual content, and violence have the potential of being kicked up a notch….or twelve.

We have a synopsis of sorts.

Spring breakers are getting murdered in Neptune, thereby decimating the seaside town’s lifeblood tourist industry. After Mars Investigations is hired by the parents of one of the victims to find their son’s killer, Veronica is drawn into an epic eight-episode mystery that pits the enclave’s wealthy elites, who would rather put an end to the month-long bacchanalia, against a working class that relies on the cash influx that comes with being the West Coast’s answer to Daytona Beach.

A lot of the original cast is coming back!

Kristen Bell playing Veronica Mars
Percy Daggs III playing Wallace Fennell
Enrico Colantoni playing Keith Mars (Veronica’s father)
Jason Dohring playing Logan Echolls
Francis Capra playing Eli “Weevil” Navarro
Ryan Hansen playing Dick Casablancas
David Starzyk playing Richard Casablancas (Dick’s father)

That’s it for now, Marshmallows. We will keep you all apprised of the details as they are confirmed. Here’s hoping for a record-breaking production schedule so we can watch soon!

About Dormaine G.

Dormaine was born in Long Island, New York where she lived most of her life. As an adult she liked to travel out of the country though her favorite places to explore were her fantasy worlds as an author. She may be a nurse by profession but her heart has always belonged to writing. As a young child she spent many Saturdays in the library nurturing her love for books. There she discovered her fascination for the science fiction genre, through books, movies and graphic novels.

Now she resides in Colorado with her husband and two feisty dogs. After many years of working in hospitals and travel nursing she took time off to pursue a career in writing. Her first novel “Connor” is in one of her favorite genres, young adult urban fantasy. Her second love is for horror of which she created the “Madame Lilly, Voodoo Priestess” series. This is just the start of her exploration as she stays locked up her office in Colorado spinning more tales.

While all of Caroline Forbes’s friends have moved on with their lives, she has remained frozen in her seventeen-year old body. No longer free to roam around Mystic Falls because of her unchanging looks, she starts to feel bound by her thoughts and emotions.

All through the years, she tried not to think of Stefan Salvatore and the future she could have had with him. A chance confrontation with a gang of teens in the cemetery changes that.

A boy with Stefan’s face emerges from the shadows. Caroline knows it is not really him but can’t stop her heart from feeling every emotion he brought out within her. To make matters worse, he brought an old foe with him.

Will Caroline finally get her happily ever after or will fate snatch it away yet again?

Read the story that takes place twenty years after the events of the hit TV series finale of The Vampire Diaries.

Hell hath no fury like a shadow from the underworld.

Caroline Forbes prides herself on being the quirky vampire always prepared with a plan. Now that she’s running the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young & Gifted, she’s starting to think she might be in over her head. Still grieving the loss of her husband Stefan, Caroline is slowly slipping into the darkness hidden behind her radiant smile. Against her better judgement, she seeks comfort in all the wrong places, in all the wrong people—one in particular.

Niklaus Mikaelson, the original vampire-werewolf hybrid and notorious bad boy doesn’t hesitate to answer Caroline’s cry for help. Old feelings are stirred and the temptation is impossible to ignore. Klaus and Caroline give in, losing themselves in a heated romance that could burn a thousand forests.

Enraptured by their world of passion, they ignore everyone around them. The neglect leads Caroline’s twin girls to do the unthinkable—they perform a spell, unleashing the shadows from the underworld. These shadows are malevolent, angry, and seeking revenge, leaving the townspeople in grave danger.

Can Caroline and Klaus fall back down to reality in time to save Mystic Falls from the shadows? Or will their whirlwind romance cost them everything?

When the Salvatore Boarding School for the Young and Gifted received an urgent message from Siberia, I jumped at the chance to go check it out. Sure I was going to miss my twin daughters with every fiber of my being but I was dying, no pun intended, to get out of Mystic Falls. Even if it was only for a surveillance mission. A romantic interlude was the last thing on my mind when I said goodbye to my family but that’s exactly what I found.

Had I known Klaus Mikaelson was going to be in Russia, I never would have offered to go investigate the string of mysterious deaths. But leave it to me, Caroline Forbes, to find the silver lining.  Maybe having an Original vampire on my side could help me solve the mystery and return home that much faster. The only thing standing in my way is my attraction to a man I should never have been attracted to in the first place.

About DJ Shaw

Born and raised in Albuquerque, New Mexico in 1977, DJ Shaw was 17 before she was able to see most of the United States. When she was 17, she decided to join the fair, traveling with them to Texas, Oklahoma, and Louisiana. Once the fair arrived in Lake Charles, DJ had decided it was time to go home, that she had had enough of traveling with the fair. She much rather preferred to sit around writing, or even telling, the lives of the people who lived in her head. She had been good at story-telling from the time she was about ten, when she scared herself so bad with her story of the Boogey-man that she couldn’t move off her bed. Her siblings would come to her for their scare fix, because they knew she could come up with something on the spot.

Having found what she loved to do at an early age, she continued to write down her stories and any poetry that came into her head. She had stacks upon stacks of notebooks filled with her work. Her love of horror movies made her stories that much more chilling.

When she’s not writing, she’s listening to music, supporting her favorite adopted brother and his band “Traveler in Pain”, playing with her five children, spending time with her husband of seven years or watching horror movies in the middle of the night just for the scare factor.

I drank the #Shadowhunters Kool-Aid…

I have to start this post out with the minor caveat that I have never read the Mortal Instruments books or any of its linked series. I have tried to start City of Bones at least five times (I own the series in audio, print, and Kindle book; I blew the money in hopes that I’d get into it more if I tried it in a different format) and it just turns into a great big snoozefest. So, I gave up on it a while ago.  I think it’s her age (I don’t generally read YA), the story just doesn’t grab me.*

A few years ago, I saw the movie and loved it.  I mean, I wasn’t crazy about all of the casting, but the story itself was pretty solid.  I thought Lily Collins and Jamie Campbell Bower were a good match together, but not knowing the series, leaving off with their weird I don’t care that we’re siblings vibe (although the audience knew it was a lie, THEY didn’t. Bleck! lol), the ending was a little vomit worthy. But I liked the movie as a whole.

Then I saw the first couple episodes of the TV series Shadowhunters.  People, you could hear my eyes roll on the other side of the globe.  The cheese factor was BAD.  I mean, follow the paper trail and at the end of the day, it is a product of a mouse wearing shorts, so there is a certain level of family friendly content required by the top brass.  I didn’t know it was a Disney product at the time, but it made sense in hindsight.  Anyway, I stopped there and didn’t think about it again until I was horrendously sick a few weeks ago. I’d just finished watching The Vampire Diaries for the billionth time through (I had a REAL, work-related reason this time!!!  Nightshade!!! So there!) and I was in search of something new to watch. From there, I don’t even know how I ended up on Shadowhunters given my past experience with the show, but I tried it again. Once you get through the first few episodes, the cast begins to find their groove and things come together. Judging my the special effects change, their budget was also increased.  lol

And now I fully understand how people end up in cults.

People, I drank the Shadowhunter Kool-Aid.

I’ve been sucked in and no amount of logical reasoning will get me to walk away now.

If you haven’t watched the show yet, be warned that this post is FULL of spoilers. MAJOR SPOILERS. Like, I’m telling you right now, I am going to COMPLETELY BLOW the season 2 finale in the first few paragraphs, so if you have not watched yet, STOP READING OR YOU’RE GOING TO HATE ME. And I don’t want you to hate me.

*As a side note, since watching the series, I have tried starting the books again and achieved the same result. It just doesn’t grab me.  *shrug*

Also, I have no clue how much of this post is spoilers for the books.

News! @Hulu Renews #ThePath for Season 3! @ThePathOnHulu @AaronPaul_8

I couldn’t be more excited about this news!  I have a list of shows I’m really nervous about losing, and this one was right near the tippy top of that list.  I watched the final of Season 2 this morning (soooo gooooooood!), and I cant wait to see what happens with Eddie Lane and the movement next season.  🙂

Hulu has renewed its praised original series The Path for a third season, with a 13-episode order. The renewal comes the same day as the second season finale.

The drama series, from Hulu sibling Universal Television and Jason Katims’ True Jack Prods, stars Aaron Paul, Michelle Monaghan and Hugh Dancy, and follows a family at the center of a controversial cult as they struggle with relationships, faith and power. Each episode takes an in-depth look at the gravitational pull of belief and what it means to choose between the life we live and the life we want.

Jessica Goldberg will again serve as showrunner/executive producer for the third season. Executive producers also include Jason Katims and Michelle Lee of True Jack.

During the show’s TCA panel in January, Goldberg noted the series feels very relevant in the new Donald Trump-ian “American environment.”

“I was watching some of the episodes after the election,” Goldberg said about being struck by a scene in which Dancy, who plays cult leader Cal, stressed the importance of walls to protect the compound from outsiders. “It feels different now, what you write, what you say,” Goldberg acknowledged. “You have to think a little deeper about what stories you are writing.”

The Path is produced by Universal Television.
